Best Overlooked Picture

Mulholland Drive

This category was for films that earned less than $20 million at the box office as of January 27, 2002. It was created to highlight the smaller films that may not have gotten quite enough distribution to reach all the members of our jury, but were seen by enough to make a passionate impression. Interestingly enough, all five ended up being indie sensations versus the possibility of their being the odd, misunderstood Hollywood flop. Mulholland Drive fit that bill for the most part, since after both Memento and Amélie crossed the $20 million mark, it became the indie sensation to see this year.
