Moulin Rouge!

A definite preference towards the reuse of pop and rock songs was shown in the category, with the first three nominees' results being highly dependent on those elements. Moulin Rouge! is a very predictable winner here, as it was the film with the most prominent songs and was the most popular musical of the year. The Royal Tenenbaums rides its overall success to a second place finish here. Perhaps more dependent on original score here than one might think, it also features some wonderfully used songs, such as Elliott Smith's "Needle in the Hay". Vanilla Sky continues Cameron Crowe's outstanding use of songs in his films; all his films have been highly dependent on music to set the mood. Rock Opera is the genre for Hedwig and the Angry Inch's transsexual love story and became an obvious choice among those who had actually seen the movie; I can predict that it would have placed higher had more people from this survey gone to see it, assuming they even had the chance. Lord of the Rings is the lone film that is solely dependent on original score that placed in the top five, and a wonderful choice it is. Surprising here is the non-factor of Ocean's 11, which relied quite heavily on lounge music to set its laid-back tone.
