Power Rankings for 1/26/05
Best Actor
P/R Last C/R Person/Film
1 -- 90 Jamie Foxx - Ray
For the rest of his life, Foxx will be remembered first and foremost as Ray Charles. He has cleaned up in other critical awards; however, the competition in this category is the most brutal of the major awards. He's the favorite, but don't believe the hype that he's a mortal lock.
2 -- 80 Leonardo DiCaprio - The Aviator
It's hard to believe that DiCaprio hasn't been nominated in 11 years. The 19-year-old prodigy has grown into a seasoned, 30-year-old member of Hollywood royalty. Portraying a previous member of this select Hollywood pantheon is exactly the type of role that wins Best Actor Oscars.
3 -- 70 Johnny Depp - Finding Neverland
Something of a surprise nominee due to being largely shut out in critical awards, Depp's presence here has to concern the other contenders. Still the recipient of continued goodwill for his portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow, he might get votes from people who feel he has paid his dues.
4 -- 65 Clint Eastwood - Million Dollar Baby
It's difficult to dismiss his candidacy; however, it is equally tough to dismiss the possibility that his supporters will split their votes between director and actor, thereby damaging his chances in both categories.
5 -- 60 Don Cheadle - Hotel Rwanda
BOP favorite Cheadle would be a leading contender most years. This year, though, he might have to settle for this first nomination. Nobody would be happier if he wins than contributors to this Web site. However, if you read the names of the other competitors, it's hard to make an argument for Cheadle over any of them.
